so my girlfriend's lodger has a goldfish in this horrible tank, he's never around and it's dying.?
Basically we want to buy a new tank etc etc etc.
Problem is a lot of places say you should have the tank set up for a month before you do anything further, given the state of the goldfish’s current environ this is totally unrealistic. Would it be ok to set up a tank in a day and then add the fish as soon as possible?
if its an emergency, i dont see why you could hurt the fish anymore than it already is, you can speed up the cycling process by buying the bacteria, they have it, or can get it for you in most pet shops. you should leave it for as long as possible though. you also need to put a flake or two of fish food in the tank every day, you dont want to buy the bacteria and then starve them to death! we had this problem once with a guy who lived next door to us (still our tenant though) he had a betta and 3 guppies in a gold fish bowl and i told him they’d died so i flushed them for him cos they were smelling. he believed me, i told him he was being cruel and told him not to get any more, and he didnt because he wanted to keep his house.
the fish are actually in my friends tanks now, all very happy and seperated from eachother. a happy ending i think. =]

I don’t see why not but if it’s dying ,why bother?
I wouldn’t pay for a tank if the goldfish will just die.

no you don’t need to wait a month that’s ridiculous just wait 24 hours and buy declorinator and bacteria so the water wont harm the fish put the declorinator in straight away but wait till the water is 20c or more before adding the bacteria this will worked instantly so you could put it in just before you put in the fish also when transferring don’t use a net get a bag which doesn’t leek put a bit of water in it from the old tank leave that in the new tank for 20Min’s then double the amount of water using the water from the new tank make sure same temperature
and wait another 5-10 Min’s and add the fish in.
make sure you don’t put any of the old water into the new tank as it will bring the disease with it

Those sites are leaving out a fact that unless there is life in the tank, waiting a month does nothing to create the biological fitration lacking in a new tank. There needs to be a bioload to feed the beneficial bacteria or a fishless cycle of adding pure ammonia to the tank until the filter is mature.
A good way to start a tank is to move a filter from an established healthy aquarium, or to take the filter pads out of it, shake them out in a large bucket of water until you create a bucket with lots of dirty water. Pour that dirty water into your new tank with the new filter running and wait 24 hours before adding fish. There are bottled biological starters you can buy at the pet shop but they have an extremely short shelf life which they are nearly always long past when you buy them. If you have to travel a distance with the dirty water, keep it agitated because the miscroscopic critters you are transporting need oxygen more than they need water. If transporting the filter, you can pour out the water. The dampness of the pad is all they need in the way of moisture. Oxygen is the critical factor.
Because you are going to be adding the fish so soon, do partial water changes twice a week for the first couple weeks, then continue to monitor ammonia with a test kit.
If it’s a long bodied goldfish, set up a 55. A short bodied goldfish, sort of tennis ball or baseball shaped body, could go in a 29 but a larger tank is better. A wet/dry or biowheel filter in a sump under the tank is the best way for goldfish filtration. You can spend less, but you might end up with just another horrible tank.
Goldfish like it cool, so don’t even think about a heater. If you don’t air condition in the summer, you might even need a chiller for the goldfish, but they can normally handle a couple warm summer months if you can..

You could try!
Add some tetra safestart. It cycled my tank in 3 days. Also, you can never do too many water changes when cycling. Good luck!!!

Do it…the fish is dying anyways….might as well try it, the fish might end up dying anyways. What do you have left to loose? I would reccomend adding a few drops of aquasafe though…just for an extra chance….
